Carrum Downs, 28th October, 2003 Work on the Libwil stern drive CPP is proceeding on schedule at the company’s Carrum Downs R&D workshop. CNC machining on the various components that make up the system is progressing well and the company expects to have the system installed and operating in its Mustang 2800 SC demonstrator by the end of November. All major components are being manufactured in-house to ensure that the system is built exactly to the design specification laid down by the design team. The propeller hub and the blades are being machined from high grade stainless steel. In production these parts will of course be cast, however for the first prototype Libwil’s workshop manager, Jim Russell, wrote some very innovative CNC programming code to enable the components to be machined from solid blocks of steel. This ensures that the design tolerances for the parts are matched very closely. The heart of the CPP is the electronic control system developed by Libwil in consultation with automotive ECU programmers and watercraft operators. The control system is the subject of an exstensive patent application and will make operation of the CPP totally transparent to the operator.
Because the system does not require a reversing gearbox, full speed powerstops are possible without detriment to the drive system. In an emergency the operator can stop the craft from full forward speed in less than 2 boat lengths, just like putting your foot on the brake in a car. The control system also picks the best power setting based on boat operating conditions resulting in better perforomance and improved fuel efficiency. The entire control system is drive by wire with no mechanical linkages between the throttle control, engine and drive system.
